What is a Search Engine and how does it work?

A search engine provides an index of pages according to the relevance to the user query. It is a service which helps the user to find something on the world wide web. It uses the keywords from user query and responds to a list of most relevant web pages back to the user. They use their own rules to search the relevant content for users and rank pages according to relevance. Google, Bing and Yahoo are the most famous search engines in the world.

A search engine uses a crawler or spider to find relevant pages and collect site data because it is impossible to do manually. Search engines use crawlers to record information and location of websites on their own servers. The information collected by crawlers are stored in a database. These data is used by search engines to find the most relevant pages to the user query. They always update their database with the latest data collected from crawlers or spiders.

So our main aim is to optimize our website according to the rules of these search engines which is known as search engine optimization. If you really want to see your website in the index of search engine then you have to follow these rules of search engines.

Duplicate Content

Never try to use duplicate content from another website. Because search engines never want to hurt their user by showing the same content on all pages of index. So it is very important to write original and unique content to improve your ranking. Duplicate contents are very harmful for your website or blog.

Length Of Content

Length of your post should be more than 600 words. Because search engines use the frequency of repetition of a word to find the relevance to the content. Describe your post as much as possible because anyone wants to read in detail.

Heading Tag

Heading tag is very important for SEO because crawlers used by search engine checks the keywords in heading tag. So use best keywords of your post in heading tag <H1>. Use heading tags (<H2>,<H3>,<H4>,<H5> and <H6>) to describe the main keywords of your post. But remember that you should have to use only one <H1> tag in your post.

Title Tag

Always use a unique and descriptive title of your page because it can increase your traffic. Search engines use the content of title to index pages.

Description of your post is very important for you because search engines display this content after your page link. Write it in interesting and descriptive way, because interesting description encourage users to click on your post link and read more.

Keywords

Always include related keywords of your post because they are very helpful to index your post. Don’t use too many keywords which are not related to your post. Use only meaningful keywords which are related to your post.

Images

Always include alt tag with your images because spiders are not able to understand the images. They use the alt tag and caption tag to understand about the images. Always use optimized images because it decreases your loading time.

Size Of Your Post

Size is different from the length of a post because the length of post helps to rank higher but the big size of post increases the loading time which is not good for ranking. Size of the post refers to size on disk ( KB, MB). You should always try to decrease the size of your post, if your post takes much time to load then they will remove your page from the index. Use highly optimized images to reduce the size of your post.

Hyperlinks

They are one of the most important parts of search engine ranking because external hyperlinks increase your website authority and internal hyperlinks help users to find your more pages on the website. But never use no follow to your internal links because it can reduce your search engine ranking. Don’t use too many affiliate links to your post, Google can punish you by removing your post from the search index.

How do search engines decide the ranking of a page?

Different search engines use different rules to decide the ranking of a page. But here are the some of them which are generally used by almost every search engines. They combine these rules to find the ranking of a webpage.

  1. Search engines think that a web page containing a term in the title tag (<title>) and heading tag (<h1>, <h2> ) is the most relevant web page for user’s search query.
  2. They also check the repetition of a word in a page. If a term searched by the user contains multiple time in your page then search engines will probably give you higher relevancy score.
  3. Authority is given by the other websites and users of search engines. Authority of your website increases, if a web page of other website have higher relevance to a term and contains a link to your page. Ranking of your page will definitely increase if users click on your post from the search index.
